Feast of Unleavened Bread
The Feast of Unleavened Bread (Hebrew: Chag HaMatzot, חַג הַמַּצּוֹת) is a seven-day biblical festival commanded by God in the Old Testament, beginning immediately after Passover.
1. Biblical Origin & Timing
Scriptural Basis: Established in Exodus 12:14–20 and Leviticus 23:6–8.
Dates: Runs for seven days, from the 15th through the 21st of Nisan (the first month of the biblical religious calendar in early spring).
High Sabbaths: The first and seventh days are observed as sacred assemblies (holy convocations) with a prohibition on regular occupational work.
2. Core Themes & Practices
Eating Matzah: For the entire week, only unleavened bread (matzah) is permitted to be eaten.
Removal of Leaven (Chametz): Households are commanded to thoroughly search for and remove all yeast or leavened products from their dwellings before the feast begins.
Remembering the Exodus: The flat, unrisen bread recalls the haste with which the Israelites fled Egypt—they had no time to wait for their dough to rise before beginning their journey through the wilderness.
3. Spiritual & Prophetic Significance
Leaven as Sin and Pride: Throughout Scripture, leaven often represents the unseen, pervasive spread of sin, pride, and moral corruption. Purging leaven symbolizes a clean break from old patterns of bondage and an embrace of spiritual purity.
Living in Truth: In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul refers to this feast metaphorically:
"Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth." (1 Corinthians 5:8)
The Sinless Walk: In Christian theology, the unleavened bread reflects Christ’s sinless life and the calling of believers to walk in holiness, set apart from worldly corruption.

Purging leaven symbolizes a clean break from old patterns of bondage and an embrace of spiritual purity.
